About Us

Cornwall Power and Sail Squadron is part of a nationwide organization of boating enthusiasts, that comprises 179 Squadrons across Canada.

Our aims are to increase boating safety and enjoyment by providing instruction in all phases of seamanship and navigation, both power and sail; to foster fellowship among members, and establish partnerships and alliances with organizations and agencies interested in boating.

Cornwall Power and Sail Squadron is a charitable, non-profit organization, with all teaching and administration work being done by volunteers.

Brief History

The first squadron was founded in 1938 by Fred Dane, George Ruel, and G. William Bowman of the Windsor Yacht Club. They modelled their squadron after the United States Power Squadrons ("USPS"), following their graduation from the Junior Piloting Course at Detroit Power Squadron. As word spread, two other groups were formed in Sarnia and London. In 1941 these three groups met in Chatham, Ontario, and formed Canadian Power Squadrons, setting up a constitution and by-laws for the organization. After a hiatus during World War II, Squadron members secured a Federal Charter and designed the CPS flag.
