Sir James Morris

  • born in Paisley, Scotland 1798
  • moved to Canada with his parents in 1801
  • appointed justice of the peace Johnstown District 1825
  • appointed Brockville police board 1832
  • involved in public meetings in Brockville urging the Government to build canals on the St. Lawrence River 1832
  • first elected to the House of Assembly, Upper Canada, in 1837 as a “Reformer” from Leeds County
  • became a commissioner for the improvement of navigation of the St. Lawrence River in 1838
  • re-elected member for Leeds County in the united Canada Parliament in 1841
  • appointed to the Legislative Council in 1844
  • appointed to the Executive Council in 1851
  • appointed Canada’s First Postmaster-General in 1851
  • speaker of the House 1853-1854
  • Government Director with the Grand Trunk Railroad 1852-1854
  • speaker of the Legislative Council 1858
  • Receiver General for Canada 1862-1863
  • died Brockville, Leeds County, Ontario 1865
